Naturally occurring compound with the chemical formula CaCO3. It occurs commonly as the mineral calcite and less commonly as aragonite, and is the major component of carbonate rocks including limestone and marble. It also forms the matrix or cement that holds together many sandstones and other sedimentary rocks [9]. See also dolomite.
