halocline
A locally steep salinity gradient along the interface between fresh groundwater and saline ground-water, such as is found at the base of the freshwater lens common beneath many limestone islands in the tropics. Water mixing and microbial activity are important influences on dissolution along the halocline, as shown for instance in blue holes [9].
